Two Negroes Attempted to Break in Factory Where They Were Working Alone.
Two negroes on Tuesday evening made an effort to break into the factory of the Tally Ho Top Co., at Eleventh and Union streets, where Misses Mary Hasson and Blanche Daniels and two other young women were working alone, but their plans were frustrated by the plucky young women, who alarmed several men in a nearby office and frightened the negroes away.
The doors were locked for the protection of the fair operatives, but at the time stated the young women heard peculiar noises coming from the direction of one of the doors. One of the young women looked out and saw two negroes making an effort to force their way quietly through the door.
She gave the alarm and, accompanied by her companions, escaped from the building by another door and ran as quickly as possible to the office of S. E. Hottenstein, at Tenth and Union streets, a block away.
The young women were badly frightened and attracted the attention of Stephen Hamilton, Owen Taylor and Charles and William Walton, who were in Mr. Hamilton's office, and as soon as they could learn the facts from the young women, they started in the direction of the factory, reaching the hole apparently the negroes had made in the door, but the other was captured by the white men, at the same time one was driving past. Several doors away, where he was in hiding. The negro gave the name of Huntington but until the police arrived he succeeded in giving no further information.
