The London Morning Post speaks well of Mr. Plitt's efforts abroad to obtain full information in regard to the Administration of the Post Office Departments of Europe.
The London Morning Post of July 30, says:
"We notice in the list of passengers by the Great Western steamer, on her recent departure for New York, the name of Mr. George Plitt. This gentleman was as we stated some months ago, commissioned by the United States Government to inquire into the workings of the various post offices of Europe. His attention has, we believe, been directed chiefly to that of England, more particularly since the change in its organization. The Post Office Department of England has received the commendation of many distinguished foreigners for the despatch and regularity with which it has performed its functions. We rather think Mr. Plitt left our shores much impressed with the perfect manner in which every thing appertaining to the receipt and delivery of letters is performed. Although the Post Office of the United States affords a considerable income, still the expenses incurred in the transmission of mails are so great as to leave no actual profit to the State. The natural difficulties of the country at present quite preclude all considerations of gain. In referring to the charge on letters in the United States, we perceive that it is something under the old rates previous to the alteration in this country; and although Mr. Plitt would recommend a reduction to the Government at Washington, still we do not for one moment imagine he would propose for its adoption any thing like the penny-wise system of Mr. Rowland Hill and its Whig prompters. When Mr. Plitt reaches the United States, we understand a report of his proceedings in Europe will be laid before Congress. His criticisms will, doubtless, afford some useful hints for our future guidance. During his residence in England, he was most industrious in seeking the best information, and we have reason to know that the heads of our Post Office rendered him every requisite facility for the accomplishment of his object. We shall look with some anxiety for the fruits of his excursion upon his arrival in America."
