Full Text

The Richmond State Journal contends that the Legislature of Virginia, at its preliminary session, not only has the right, but it is its duty, to elect U. S. Senators—that the failure to do so would be a "delinquency," would be looked upon by Congress as "suspicious," would doubtless "postpone the admission," &c. The reason for all this is indicated in the closing remark, that "the politics of the Senators elected would be a direct and unmistakable indication of the politics and sentiments of the probationary Legislature." In other words, not to "put too fine a point upon it," if the Legislature should elect Senators and the Senators should not be of the Ultra Radical School, then it would be urged, as proof, that the State is not reconstructed and ought not to be admitted! Beware of "steel traps and spring guns!"

The Richmond State Journal contends that the Legislature of Virginia at its preliminary session has the right and duty to elect U.S. Senators, as failure would be seen as delinquency and suspicious by Congress, potentially postponing admission. The politics of elected Senators would indicate the legislature's sentiments; electing non-Ultra Radical Senators could prove the state is not reconstructed.
