Jobs for approximately 14,000 men will be provided on Minnesota highways if the state matches federal aid offered for this year and next, according to N W. Elsberg, highway commissioner.
"If revenues of the highway department are restored to the 1932 level," said Commissioner Elsberg "Minnesota will be able to obtain nearly $6.000,000 offered us by the federal government for road construction and unemployment relief.
"That would mean jobs for all 14,000 or more Minnesota working men, and the circulation of $14,000 000 in Minnesota business and trade channels. If Minnesota does not match the federal aid, the 14,000 men will have to be provided for by relief or other expenditures.
"The charge has been made that political favoritism will be shown by the highway department in employing men under such a construction program. This is entirely unfounded. On all projects financed with federal highway funds, the hiring of men is in the hands of the National Re-employment Service, a federal agency over which the state has no control.
"Members of the legislature will search a long time before they can find a better bargain for the tax-payers than this opportunity to get two dollars worth of road construction and employment for every dollar advanced by the state."
