Washington, April 18.—In the Senate Beck argued against the right of a majority to elect officers at an extra session. The Democrats would consider the question in December, but he believed Riddleberger would not then be a candidate. The Virginia election would then be over. The Democrats might then tender as a candidate for Sergeant-at-Arms a conservative war Republican, between whom and the Confederate Repudiator (Riddleberger) the Republicans might choose. He believed, however, that the plan would be hindered by the Republican Senators. He gave notice that Riddleberger's promises in Virginia would remain unfulfilled. Beck's gallant Union soldier candidate for Sergeant-at-Arms is said to be a citizen of Kansas, and a Republican, but Beck and his friends decline to give his name, saying only that he is a prominent and popular Republican. Vest says he will nominate John D. Stevenson of Illinois, who was one of Logan's best fighters. Logan says he is a gallant Union General and a true Republican.
