Edison Once Was
Artist's Model

Freehold. N. J., Jan. 14.(AP)
Thomas Alva Edison was
a
model: an artist's model.

When the "father of light" was
a young man of 30 years, he
posed as the gunner for the
Monmouth battle monument
which still stands in Freehold.

The monument was cast more
than 50 years ago by James Ed-
ward Kelly, New York artist. It
is a memorial of the famous bat-
tle of June 28. 1778.

Kelly sought for a model a
young man with a smooth face.
In those days young men were
loath to shave their laboriously
grown beards and moustaches
andburnsides.

Edison was "his man."
He called on the young inven-
tor. who then was working in a
laboratory in the lower east side
of New York city.

"You'll be just a model, Tom,"
Kelly recalled telling Edison.
"There will be no pay and your
name will not appear."

Edison agreed provided he
would not be disturbed from his
work. Kelly sketched him while
he labored at his laboratory
bench.
