SLAYER AND VICTIM—A man identified as Claire Van Horn, 46, of London, Ont., Can. (left), is shown in Menlo Park, Calif., city prison, where he had surrendered and said he was the hammer slayer of his niece, Mrs. Nancy McLennan, 27 (right). Mrs. McLennan died in Sequoia Hospital, Redwood, Calif., today, the victim of four or five blows from a hammer and at least three knife wounds in the chest. Police said Van Horn entered the police station with blood on his hands and gave himself up.—UP Wirephoto.

Hammer Death Is Admitted By Canadian

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (R)—An impassive, balding Canadian who says he "felt no emotion at all" was held today as charges were prepared in the claw hammer slaying of a pretty dancing instructor 19 years his junior. Clare Van Horne, 46. London, Ont., walked into a San Francisco police station yesterday with blood on his hands and coat and admitted he had bludgeoned Mrs. Nancy McLennan, 27, as she slept at the home of her mother in nearby Menlo Park. The slightly built Canadian contended "she was my girl friend up to four years ago in Canada but her mother objected and I got burned over it. We used to go together but then she came out here. . . I sent letters and she didn't answer." He also said she "would not have anything to do with me" because of "some spiritualist church she was going to." Mrs. McLennan. shapely mother of two daughters, was separated from her husband in London. She came to Menlo Park in November and lived with her mother and stepfather. Mr. and Mrs. William Van Horne. The California Van Horne is the Canadian's brother. Van Horne followed her to Menlo Park Friday. George Potter, the San Francisco suburb's police chief said there had been sharp tension in the family and that Mrs. McLennan had been trying to avoid Van Horne. She went to Lake Tahoe with friends Saturday and, upon returning at 11 p.m. Sunday, refused to talk to' Van Horne - going straight to her bedroom.
