Full Text
If we expect the aid and sympathy of the Governments of Europe, we must help ourselves. What is our duty? We must require that the flag of our country shall be restored to its position in every State and the laws restored. We must sacrifice millions before we submit to the standard of the so-called Confederacy. We can never be two people. We must be one thing or nothing. We can never have peace on any other condition.
The speaker had never believed that there was any serious difference in any part of the country with regard to the principles of our Government. Men may say that they have lost everything—property and family—but so long as the Government is sustained they have lost nothing. All we have to do is to go on till we have established the supremacy of our laws and the Constitution of our country.
