"By the packet which takes this letter, send you the Courier Francais for September thirtieth. It contains an account of a "Constitutional Banquet," given to General Lafayette by his constituents at Maux. I think you may gather some particulars from it that will be interesting to your American readers. The General is now at Lagrange, but I saw him as he returned from Maux, in exceedingly good health and spirits. His appearance indicates even more vigor and activity than when he was in the United States. During the sittings of the Deputies he is constant in his attendance, and engages with a lively interest all that passes. He and Benjamin Constant head the elite of the extreme gauche. His love of liberty is as fresh as it was when he fought the battles of freedom in the new world, and it has never been a trait in his character to conceal his sentiments or avoid expressing them when occasion required."
