More particulars of the late Violation.
In our last, we noticed the late violation of the Embargo laws, in this town; which may justly be considered as one of the most barefaced, unprincipled transactions, that has transpired since the institution of our Republican government.
It appears that the determination to send the sloop out in "defiance of all authority," had been publicly made known several days previous to the attempt; and the federalists (with few exceptions) were strenuous advocates for the proceeding. These men, not content with aiding and abetting this violation of the laws of government, in the first instance; had previously determined, if the sloop should be taken to wrest her from the officers who should hold her in possession.
For the completion of this diabolical object. a multitude of the "friends to order and good government," assembled, soon after the sloop arrived in the harbor, on Mr. Brown's wharf, where the bellish plot was the general topic of conversation; and many of the mob were prepared for "cutting the throats of every democrat in town?"--Boats, scows, &c. were prepared, and the men armed for carrying into effect their project: but Messrs. BROWN & BARTLETT (whose timely interference reflects honor on them) endeavored to quiet those disorganizing, seditious and turbulent men, and finally succeeded in dispersing the Mobility; not however without many bitter exclamations against the government and its officers, for faithfully performing their official duties.
That the party, who have so lately addressed the President, in a respectful and decent manner; for a removal of the embarrassments under which they pretend to suffer, should be concerned in so disgraceful and riotous a proceeding before their very respectful Petition had reached the city of Washington; and before the determination of the President could possibly be known, may appear strange to some of our fellow citizens at a distance, but to those who are acquainted with Newburyport federalism, it is nothing remarkable.-It is in fact a piece with their whole conduct-and the more discord and confusion that appears to be excited, the more delighted and happy are they. We only regret that the Collector, suffered the men concerned in this transaction to escape unpunished. If the laws are to be violated with impunity, and the lives and property of those who discharge the duties which they have sworn faithfully to fulfil, are to be threatened, and the aggressors to escape unpunished-we may well exclaim, "There is no safety here."
