The Old North State.—Those who fail to appreciate the enterprise and talents of "Old Rip," as some do most scandalously call her, must themselves be sound asleep. Is it nothing, one might well ask, as it has been asked by another, to have one of the longest and best Rail-roads, and the most elegant and durable State Capitol in the Union? Is it common in the Southern States, to find a million invested in manufactures? Does it not betoken some enterprise to have more steam power at work in a single Seaport than may be found in a half-dozen neighboring cities? Shall no credit be taken for keeping out of debt and educating her people, by the honest, industrious old State? Then as to talents, she points us to such men as Badger, Graham, Morehead, Mangum, Rayner, Stanly, Kerr. We should like to know what State can boast of more or brighter jewels than she can, or one that is in better hands! We can echo the sentiment, uttered by a Southern paper, that, in all that is honest and useful and worthy of imitation, there is no State, south of Mason & Dixon's line, which deserves to be compared with incorruptible North Carolina!
