SURFACE WATER DELUGES THE BIG SANITARY PIPES PUMPS AT OUTFALL CAN SCARCELY KEEP THE WATER DOWN TO PROPER LEVEL—ACTION REQUIRED.
J. Vanhuyzen, Superintendent of Sewers, apprehends trouble this winter from too much drainage of surface waters into the sanitary sewer. "The rains of yesterday," said Mr. Vanhuyzen, "have given the pumps at the outfall all they could do to keep the water down. This shows that we are likely to have the same trouble this as last winter, unless the Board of Health will take some action preventing the draining of surface water into the sanitary sewer. Wherever there have been surface sewers put in the people cause no trouble. But these surface sewers are not as numerous as they should be, hence with every heavy rain we are reminded that a lot of people are draining their roofs into the wrong sewer.
Last winter by working the pumping station to its full capacity all the time we were barely able to get rid of the sewage.
"There should be surface water sewers put in on Alakea street from Hotel to King. The water in that street accumulates and when it reaches King or Queen it can't get into the sewer. There should also be a surface sewer from Nuuanu stream to Emma street on School street."

Event Details
Superintendent J. Vanhuyzen reports that yesterday's rains strained the sewer pumps at the outfall, indicating likely winter issues from surface water entering sanitary sewers. Calls for Board of Health action to stop this and install more surface sewers, including on Alakea street from Hotel to King and from Nuuanu stream to Emma street on School street. Last winter, pumps ran at full capacity to manage sewage.
