HAPPINESS.

HAPPY the man, whose peaceful mind
From the gilt scene retires ;
And in a rural friendly shade,
With sweet simplicity array'd,
Tastes Virtue's sacred fires.

In smooth succession glide his days.
No jealous pang his peace allays--
No poisonous Envy stings ;
But gay Content, and harmless Mirth,
Sit smiling at his sparkling hearth,
And pleasure spreads her wings.

Thus in a life of social love,
Preparing for his birth above,
He is by all ador'd ;
Till nature, gently whispering, says,
Full well thou'st fill'd thy mortal days,
Be now to Heaven restor'd.
