DEADLOCK IN CAUCUS
No Choice for Senatorial Candidate at Lincoln
-Hayward in the Lead, With Thompson Following Second.
LINCOLN, March 2.-Republican members of the legislature, 73 in all, two being absent, met in caucus at 8:30 o'clock last night to ballot for senator. According to an agreement, it will require 50 votes to nominate, two-thirds of the entire Republican membership. The only effect of the first 16 ballots was to reduce by two votes the strength of Judge Hayward, as shown in the legislative ballot of yesterday. These two are supposed to have gone to Thompson. At the end of the 16th, at midnight, a motion to take a recess for half an hour carried.
The caucus cast the 24th ballot before the members were ready to adjourn. Motions to adjourn after the 19th and 22d ballots were voted down by the Hayward men, who finally made the move to quit until tonight at 7:30. There was little change in the voting up to the last. On the 21st ballot Clark got a couple of votes. On the 22d and 23d Lambertson got two. On the last ballot Thompson of Merrick voted for Wilcox. Four of the Webster men voted secretly part of the time and openly part of the time, the result being unchanged. The 24th and last ballot, which was cast at 10 minutes after 1 o'clock, was as follows:
Hayward, 37; Thompson, 16; Webster, 9; Field, 5; Adams, 1; Hainer, 1; Lambertson, 1; Talbot, 1.
