Jefferson Council Taking Action To Stop Problems In Several Traffic Areas

No Action Taken On Disposition Of Village Hall

West Jefferson Village council is still not decided on whether or not they have a parking violation problem or a traffic problem, but they are taking action to correct something by adopting new ordinances to regulate the flow of traffic and the parking rules.

A motion to adjourn interrupted a discussion of the merits of two ordinances now in the process of being passed. One designates several streets as one way traffic only, and the other designates parking on one side of several streets.

Councilman Ben Edwards pointed out that traffic in the residential areas of the village is not so heavy as to constitute a danger. He emphasized that the problem of congestion was one of properly enforcing the present village regulation pertaining to parking. He said with the proper use of the police powers, illegal parking could be stopped, thereby preventing congestion, and also eliminating the need for the one-way traffic ordinances as well as new parking regulation ordinances. One councilman in favor of the one way streets made the motion to adjourn, interrupting the discussion on the question.

Council also gave second reading to an ordinance which will make new street lights available at some areas now without lights.

During the meeting they listened to a prospective building, electrical and plumbing inspector who told them of the services he can offer to the village government.

In view of the fact that the council will soon be leaving office, they decided to postpone action on the inspector until the new administration takes office early in 1958.

No action has yet been taken on disposition of the old Village Hall, and no reports were brought out of the Building and Grounds Committee at the Monday night session.

The building has been vacated, and a fence built around it to prevent falling objects from injuring pedestrians.
