CHICAGO, Ill.-Speaking to the

Negro National Congress meeting

here last week, Dean H. M. Smith

of the Chicago Baptist Institute

declared, ". . . the Negro Church has

always succeeded when it has been

courageous and militant. It has in-

variably failed when it has been

cautious and timid

"Certain selfish and sinister forc-

es at work in our present social or-

der seek to have church people, in

both the pulpit and pew, feel that

the business of religion in general

and christianity in particular is to

make people satisfied

with their

lot in life, no matter how desperate

and difficult that lot may happen

to be.

"As a matter of fact the Bible,

Negro History, and the life of Je-

sus are all one in driving home the

fact that christianity is at its fin-

est and best when it make men

dissatisfied with

injustices and

human suffering.

"The Negro Church today need

men who like Moses will lead their

people out of the land of bondage

-the Uncle Toms in Negro life

should stay out of the pulpit and

remain in 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'.
