DR. WOODARD ADVOCATES OPENING OF COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, AND POST GRADUATE WORK
WILBERFORCE, March 1 (ANP) Wilberforce ought to start planning for post war education by opening a first-class college of engineering and by developing a real university that would offer post graduate training, declared Dr. Dudley Woodard, professor of mathematics at Howard University and a Wilberforce alumnus of the class of 1903, in a scholarly address given on the 87th anniversary of

celebration of Founders Day Wednesday morning. His main theme was "Higher Education for Negroes Then and Now."
Receiving a thundering ovation for his statement that in Dr. Charles H. Wesley, Wilberforce has the best president it ever had, Bishop Reverdy C. Ransom, chairman of the church board of trustees, gave a vivid picture of "Wilberforce then and now."
The venerable bishop, who followed Dr. Woodard is an alumnus of the class of 1868 and has been one of the school's staunchest supporters.
Bishop Howard Gregg, one of the former presidents, echoed Bishop Ransom's sentiments about Dr. Charles Wesley's being the best president Wilberforce ever had in its history.
The afternoon session was devoted to an alumni luncheon program, followed by a military drill by the ROTC.
The evening address was given by President David D. Jones of Bennett college who said that we should be thankful to the founders for having given us Wilberforce but at the same time we should continue to carry on their work by "thinking" in terms of continued progress and thus show our real appreciation of the Founders. He was followed by Atty. Ray Hughes, chairman of the board of trustees of the college of education and industrial arts of Wilberforce. Giving a vivid historical background of the gradual development of the growing cooperation between the church and state boards of trustees which finally culminated in selection of a joint board of control in March, 1942, he asserted that Wilberforce has been gradually introducing a unified program of control and that complete harmony now exists between church and state programs.
