On Monday the 10th of July, being the day on which Mr. Douglas of Douglas came of age, there was a numerous meeting at Bothwell castle of the relations and friends of his illustrious family, to congratulate him on the happy occasion, and amongst others his Grace the Duke of Queensberry.

There was a very magnificent dinner, with a grand dessert, during all the time of which a band of music played, and after dinner the following toasts were drank, viz. The King, Queen, and Royal Family. Archibald Douglas of Douglas, chief of the name. The Duchess of Douglas and the Duke of Queensberry, the late worthy guardians, to whom the family of Douglas owes so much. The family of Douglas, and to its increase. The House of Peers. The glorious 27th of February 1769. The Duke of Newcastle, and the Duchess of Queensberry. The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, and the Duchess of Northumberland. Lord Mansfield, and the Duchess of Buccleugh. The Marquis of Lothian, and Lady Mansfield. Lord Cathcart, and the Marchioness of Lothian. Lord Advocate, and Sir Fletcher Norton. Mr. Thurlow. May the Douglas and Piercy be ever as firm friends as they were formerly generous foes. The numerous friends of Douglas in all parts of the world. May fools become wise, and knaves become honest.

Each of these toasts was accompanied with a discharge of cannon, and the joyful acclamations of a crowd of people from the country round.

In the evening several fireworks were played off, and there was a large bonfire on the top of the old castle, which made a fine appearance. The company were then entertained with a ball, which was opened by the Duke of Queensberry and the Duchess of Douglas, after which there was an elegant supper. The whole was concluded with the greatest propriety; and every one testified a most sincere joy at the happiness and prosperity of the noble house of Douglas.
