The Manchester Democrat is getting to be really rich again, having got over another bare spot, the election in the 3d district. The same paper that is filled with election returns is also filled with slaps at the powers "that be" like the following upon old Father Ritchie's swindle that some of the locofoco papers would like to deny and others keep silent upon, like our neighbors of the Patriot. The Democrat says:
"The Printing Swindle Defeated.-We rejoice in the triumph of honesty and fairness even though this triumph may sometimes be at the expense of those of our own political party. Father Ritchie, of the Washington Union, is somewhat famous as a delinquent contractor and greedy speculator upon the public bounty. He attempted at the close of the session to relieve the Treasury of some $100,000 by securing the passage of an act to remunerate him in a printing contract, for which he had made a voluntary bid. We stated last week that the bill for his relief had passed Congress. This was incorrect. The bill was brought before the House the last night of the session, and the trickery of Ritchie and his instruments was so handsomely exposed that it was well nigh unanimously rejected. It was shown that the snivelling cry of losses by his contract was all a sham, and that the profits were sufficiently large."
