Event Details
The destruction of the Turkish fleet was occasioned by Capt. Gregg, Lieut. Torrington and Lieut. Dugdale, three Englishmen commanding fire-ships. Lieut. Dugdale steered his vessel close to a Turkish man-of-war of 84 guns at night; his design discovered, his Russian crew abandoned him, but he hooked the grapnel-iron into the enemy's rigging, jumped into the sea, was taken up, conveyed to the Russian Admiral, who caressed him, advanced him, and promised to recommend him to the Empress.
