Full Text

The devious ways of Kentucky justice received another illustration last Tuesday in Rowan county. Nine men from one of the gangs who have made that county a terror to law-abiding citizens had their examining trial before two magistrates, one of whom decided that the prisoners should be held for trial, while the other declared that they were justified in the crimes they had committed. According to Kentucky law, when two magistrates disagree the decision of the one most favorable to the accused prevails. The prisoners were therefore turned loose to renew the reign of violence and murder with which they have so long terrorized Rowan county. If Kentucky judges cannot protect the people better than this, the state should call Judge Lynch to its aid.—Philadelphia Press.
