1951, HAPPY NEW YEAR! But where do we go from here? For the last Ten days the favorite phrase has been "Peace On Earth. Good Will To Men." To tell the truth, there are few places on earth today where there is Good Will toward anybody.
At the beginning of 1950, all eyes were centered upon Western and Eastern Europe. Little thought was given the rim of the world and the little yellow men who inhabited it. Whether we view these Asiatics with mingled emotions or just plain everyday resentment, their shadows have fallen across the homes of every man and woman living on this earth.
Statesmen carelessly overlooked the tremendous revolution that was taking place in the East at the end of World War II. They were blinded to the ambitions of the East, who for centuries, lay quiet, but seething, a waiting the right moment to rise from its sleep, with a determination to stand on its feet and demand recognition amid the rest of the nations of the world.
There is nothing new about the awakening of the East. The late Franklin Roosevelt saw it coming, and felt the need for some legislation which would provide aid to the backwood countries, thus, his "Four Freedoms." He wanted to include China among the great powers, but Churchill could not be convinced that China should be numbered among the elite. Men through hundreds of years have warned that the'day would confront the West, when Asia would rise and begin to march, and all the bells would begin to toll of themselves.
Jan Christian Smuts declared on his 87th birthday that a great revolution was taking place in the East, and the Dark and Yellow races would eventually become their own masters. More recently, Dr. Bond, president of Lincoln University, saw the emerging or ambition during his trip to Africa.
America is in a better position to understand this social and economic revolution than any other country in the world today. But we must cleanse our hearts of prejudices, less we become a hated symbol.
