Fraud Order Against the Globe Gem Company of Lonsdale, R. I.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 12.—Postmaster-General Meyer has signed a fraud order prohibiting the use of the mails to the Globe Gem Company and the Scott Collection Agency and their officers and agents, at Lonsdale, R. I. The inspectors who investigated this case reported that the Gem company has been advertising that it would give two solid gold rings to every person who sold twelve boxes of "Gem Breath Perfume," manufactured by the company, the price being 10 cents per box. Upon receipt of replies the company would send twelve boxes of the perfume, with the statement that on receipt of $1.20 within two weeks a ring would be sent.
The inspector reported that upon receipt of the money the company would send a cheap and tawdry ring, the cost of which was less than 15 cents, and officials of the company admitted that the rings were not as advertised. In collecting from persons who failed to make remittances for perfume sent the officials of the Gem company operated under the name of the Scott Collection Agency.
