Full Text

The Roads—The roads on the Washington side of the creek, entering Georgetown, are in a most shameful condition. Oh, that another Boz would come along and pour out his vials of righteous wrath and contempt upon our Metropolitan ways.

Such humps and hollows, holes and quagmires, as are to be found on the mud-track, dignified with the name of Pennsylvania avenue, certainly can be equalled by no other Metropolis in the Universe, not even we suspect by that of Timbuctoo, or the capital of Patagonia, if it has any. Some city correspondent the other day complained of our Fire Companies breaking up their sidewalks; the Georgetown respondent might have placed his reply on higher grounds than what he did, by asking his city friend how it could be helped? If the corporation of Washington will not keep tolerable roads, how can it be expected that the Firemen of Georgetown, who are not accustomed at home to such sloughs as the avenue contains, will leave the only practicable path, and involve themselves and their apparatus in bogs and pools.—Georgetown Advocate.
