Powhatan Board To Hear New Plans On Budget

A public hearing on the estimated receipts and expenditures of local revenue for fiscal year commencing July 1 was set for Monday, June 8 by members of the Powhatan Board of Supervisors during the May session of the board.

The supervisors heard a report that approximately $2,000 in personal property taxes for the years '53, '54 and '55 remained uncollected. Leslie L. Mason, a local attorney, was employed to collect the delinquent taxes. His salary for the task was placed at one third of the total collected.

For a discussion of the county roads system quite toned down from the April session of the board. E. C. Mann, county superintendent and R. V. Lancaster, III, resident engineer, were on hand to answer questions. At the April session which was the annual public roads hearing, numerous complaints brought about by the lack of funds for secondary or farm-to-market roads resulted in adoption of a stern resolution to the governor, highway department and others protesting the neglect of such roads.

The board expressed dissatisfaction with the amount of money being spent on interstate roads designed to speed the motorist on through the state.

Col. L. W. Skaggs appeared before the board in regards to the possibility of getting the State Highway Department to make certain changes in some of the drainage ditches along the streets to the sides of the court house square.

The board and highway officials viewed the situation discussed by Skaggs as well as the possibility of constructing a parking lot to the rear of the square. No action was taken by the supervisors.

Dr. E. C. Gates, of the county health department presented the county portion of a $15,995 Health Department budget for the new fiscal year.
