The inhabitants of Portland, are this day presented with the first number of THE GAZETTE, with the best respects of the EDITOR. If it meets their approbation, and merits their patronage, they will have an opportunity of aiding a young man, who is anxious to deserve their support. Should the subscription in this town, prove as general as in the country, there is no room to doubt of success.
Those gentlemen in the country, who have favored him with their names, will please to accept his warmest thanks.
Gentlemen in different parts of the country, who have not returned the subscriptions lodged with them, are requested to forward them, to this office.
Beware of Personalities;
'Avoid personalities, young man, as you value the reputation of your paper,' has been din'd in my ears a hundred times. What! shall I overlook the insolent lampoon contained in Baker & George's paper, and suffer these shameless blockheads to pass with impunity? It is hard to resist the strong impulse of youth—but considering the polluted source from which it sprung, prudence, and a desire to please, dictate silence.
More important matter shall occupy the Gazette.
THE EDITOR.
To Readers, Correspondents, &c.
The Editor has to apologize for numerous omissions this day.
The aid of men of letters, and others, in affording communications, news, &c. for this Gazette and THE TIMES, is earnestly solicited.
Brother Printers are requested to forward their papers in exchange.
