Full Text

Famine in the West of Ireland.
A letter written in the country of Sligo, Ireland, on the 4th ult., says:

It is a most merciful part that the good people of the United States are taking for the poor of this district. The people of this part of the country are really worse off than they were this time twelve months ago. Then there were large sums of money collected for them, and food purchased and distributed; but now nothing is done for them. The poor houses are filled to suffocation, and thousands of creatures, half-naked, are running about, having nothing to eat but raw turnips, which they steal from the fields! The very worst apprehensions may be conceived as to the consequences of such food. We may well expect another season of fever and dysentery, and swelled limbs.
