The Fount:
For the Alexandria Herald.
THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM,
And the Garden of Gethsemane,
Twas night-darkness and silence held domain
O'er earth's wide horizon. The up-lift eye
Saw here and yon, a lonely star, twinkling
As anxious to withhold its feeble ray.
But O! one beam'd with sterner lustre
For in the west-'twas the prophetic star
Of Bethlehem. I saw and gazed and worshipp'd,
Till it, descending, dipp'd the mighty deep.
Then my enraptur'd soul was awed by fear
O'erwhelming Earth, my peace, and Hope my
joy;
Shrinking within myself and prostrate-God
Of heav'n' I cried, 'my guiding lamp is gone,
Lost and benighted save me or I perish.
When, lo! an angel of the lord appear'd;
And gently said "Fear not th' Eternal son,
In whom all heav'n, is pleas'd, now prays to God
In sad Gethsemane. The bitter cup
Has touch'd his lips-his soul in agony,.
While sweat in drops of blood fall o'er the ground
Exclaims-'Oh father, let it pass from me,
But yet not as I will, but as thou wilt.'
The father wills; and yields his only son
T' atone for man, indebted and undone.
To morrow 'll seal his doom, and then thy doubts
And fears will all be o'er: but woe to him,
By whom the son's betray'd--despair,
And anguish, torture exquisite shall haunt
The traitor in eternal hell." But thou,
Fear not-The sun of Righteousness shall
Rise with healing wings, diffusing peace and joy
And consolation through thy downcast soul."
