Secretary of War Dern Announces Greater Defense Plans

WASHINGTON, April 8.- Increased strength in the army on the Pacific Coast is promised by Secretary of War Dern in a letter to United States Senator Frederick Steiwer, of Oregon.

The Secretary of War, in answering a specific inquiry about Fort Stevens, Oregon, said: "The War Department plans, in the event the War Department appropriations bill as finally passed retains the increase for the enlisted strength of 42,000 men, to provide material increases in the garrison at Fort Stevens as well as all garrisoned posts on the Pacific Coast."
