Anderson, March 31.--Having suffered a broken neck and collar bone and a fracture of the skull, Carl Lockaby, 18 year old son of Mrs. W. H. Lockaby of near Easley, lies at the Anderson county hospital at death's door as a result of an automobile accident, which occurred some miles northeast of Anderson at 7:30 o'clock Saturday evening.

The other six occupants of the car in which the youth was riding and which collided with another automobile in which several negroes were riding, escaped serious injuries.

Lockaby was thrown from the machine when the collision occurred. Both of the machines were demolished.

Occupying the automobile besides young Lockaby were Willie Saville, 16, Ralph Saville, 14, Fred, Roy and Clyde Shaw and Van Whitmire, youths of near Easley. Although the young men were painfully injured, with the exception of Ralph Saville and Whitmire, who suffered slight scratches, the other four youths were treated by an Easley physician, while Lockaby was brought to a local hospital.

Young Lockaby is the eldest of two sons of Mrs. Lockaby, a widow. The seven young men were out riding Saturday night, she said, when the accident occurred. The machine in which they were riding was the property of the elder Saville youth, who was driving the car.

The impact with which the two machines met in a head-on collision was so great as to practically demolish both machines. The escape of the other six youths and the negroes occupying the other machine from serious injuries was virtually miraculous, it was said. Young Lockaby was rendered unconscious as a result of the accident and was still unconscious today although life lingered.

One of the attending physicians stated that no hope was entertained for the lad's recovery and that he might live for several days despite the fact that the neck had been broken. Young Lockaby's injuries include, besides a broken neck, a broken collar bone, a broken lower jaw and a fractured skull. The physicians rendered every assistance possible to the injured youth Saturday night, but his condition is said to be such that there is little possibility of his recovery.
