NEW MUSIC PRODIGIES
SAN FRANCISCO.—An array of talented juvenile musicians has sprung up on the Pacific coast in the wake of Yehudi Menuhin, 11-year-old violinist whose playing caught the fancy of musical centers in America and Europe.
Among those making their debut this winter is chubby eight-year-old Hephzibah Menuhin, sister of Yehudi. Her first appearance in public concert was received by coast critics with a cordiality scarcely secondary to that accorded Yehudi. She has studied music for three and a half years, developing a technique and poise which appear far in advance of her age. Her parents say they will permit the little miss to appear in public only once a year until she develops.
Other juveniles heralded as prodigies are Ruggiero Ricci, eight-year-old San Francisco violinist, and Eleanor Harshman, nine-year-old pianist of Seattle.
The Washington girl is making her debut with the symphony orchestra of Seattle as a soloist this season. She plays Paderewski's "Minuet."
Ricci appeared first in this city. Critics compare his ability to that of noted violinists. For his repertoire, the young Italian presented selections from Vieuxtemps, Viotti, Rode and Spohr with apparent ease.
Yehudi Menuhin, upon his second appearance in New York, where he played recently as soloist with the Philharmonic Symphony orchestra, was greeted with an enthusiasm rivaling that of his premiere audience. He first played in New York in 1927.
