Word has reached this city of a desperate and bloody fight that occurred at Mardis, near Deeth, in Elko county yesterday afternoon. As a result of the fray, one man by the name of Jim McKelvey is dead and another, Charles Winslow, is seriously wounded and may not recover.

Officers left Elko last night for the scene of the battle and will take the dead man and his wounded partner, and the ones who are responsible for the condition back to Elko.

From the information that reached here it seems that the two men were on the Graham ranch and were caught killing a steer. The persons who made the discovery attempted to put them under arrest and the men resisted. Guns were flashed and in a moment a battle resulted in which McKelvey was killed and Winslow seriously wounded. The sheriff of Elko county, the coroner and district attorney were at once notified and they left in a short time for Mardis.

The dead man is of middle age and is known throughout that section as "Mahogany Jim."
