Paraclifta, Feb. 21, 1856.
Mr. Editor--Court is under way, and disposing of business rapidly. Judge Smith presides well, and gives general satisfaction. So this is good news if I write you nothing else. But hold on. On Monday, the first day of Court, the people in great numbers, were assembled in this place to hear the political discussion lately advertised to come off between Col. E. A. Warren and A. H. Garland, Esq., of your town. Previous to the time of speaking Mr. Garland gave way to B. H. Epperson, Esq., of Texas, who was here on private business. Mr. E. opened and Col. W. replied, giving Mr. E. the conclusion--and the Lordy! Democratic heads hung down like weary creatures fast asleep and nodding rapidly. The Colonel's favorite expressions of knocking from taw, pitching in, butting the bull off the bridge, &c., and so on, were entirely behind the times. While Mr. E., in a clear and masterly style, discussed the politics of the day, Col. W. was coaxing and persuading the citizens of Sevier that he was a good and true Democrat, and if they did not nominate him for Congress he was firmly of the opinion that they ought. I wish I had time to give you the particulars of the speaking, but I have not. But one thing is certain: leading Democrats were heard to say that the Hon. Col. W. had not defended Democracy as it should have been done, and all yielded that Mr. E. made an able and telling speech for the cause that finds a kind response in every heart. Mr. E. is a fine, high toned gentleman, and I would be glad if you knew him, for then you would see one more reason for living on earth.
No news. Great deal of rain, and all the streams running high--and I see many countenances breaking open at the idea of having navigation soon.
Yours, in a hurry,
SEVIER.
