Event Details

Capt. Benjamin Lunt's schooner from Newbury, loaded with lime and other goods and several passengers, with a tow of masts, struck a rock near Jerry's Point while entering the harbor and beat on it for over an hour. Water reached the lime causing prodigious smoke, leading Capt. Lunt to use a small float to carry people ashore fearing fire. While he was ashore with one woman, a swell washed the schooner inside the rock and it sank. Remaining people saved themselves by clinging to masts and ropes until carried ashore.
