Adams's Defence.--Among the constant impositions of the times, it has been perpetually rung in the ears of the people, by the democratic editors, that Mr. Adams, in his celebrated "Defence of the American Constitutions," had really defended, not our Constitutions, but the British, and that the book was no more than a covert recommendation of monarchy. The story is at this moment believed by almost every antifederalist in the U. S. who has not read the book, but it is one of that nature which, as to the public, is hardly susceptible of any thing more than a flat denial, and that with most of these good folks passes for just nothing at all. But as I make it a rule never to let pass any opportunity to confront their assertions and opinions with their own authority, I therefore seize this occasion to republish the following extract from the British Town and Country Magazine for 1787, sent me by a friend. It seems proper to inform those who are unacquainted with Mr. Dickinson, that he is now and has always been at the head of the democratic party in Pennsylvania.
"Extract of a letter from a member of
"the Convention to his friend in London.
"Mr. Dickinson says, that Mr. Adams's
"book has diffused such excellent princi-
"ples among us, that there is little doubt
"of our adopting a vigorous and com-
"pounded Federal Legislature. Our il-
"lustrious minister in this city to his
"country, has done us more service than
"if he had obtained alliances for us with
"with all the nations in Europe."
