HOLE PLUGGED IN DEFENSE POSITIONS
Washington, Apr. 24-UP- The United States, by establishing a base in Funafuti in the Ellice Islands. has plugged the biggest hole in its chain of defense positions along the supply line to the South Pacific.
Experts pointed out today that had the Japanese remained in control of the Ellice group and developed bases there. they could have threatened the Samoan Islands to the southeast, the Fijis to the south and the Phoenix Islands to the northeast-all Allied defense links.
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox said that American forces have been on Funafuti for some time. A Navy spokesman said the occupation was accomplished without opposition from the Japanese. who had been reported in the Ellice group during the early phases of the Pacific war.
