Ease Situation in Walkerville

WINDSOR, Ont.-Tense atmosphere that pervaded General Motors' Walkerville plant last week is gradually becoming calm once more. The shop committee met the local Manager Church last Tuesday and several grievances were ironed out.

Volume of production, the most contentious problem, was settled to the satisfaction of both parties. While the curtailment of production, to a certain extent, created a situation that necessitated layoff of a small number of temporary employees, still the reduced rate of production will work out to the advantage of the workers as a whole.

Although a few minor grievances remain unsettled, considerable progress was made in establishing a more cordial relationship between the management and the union. The greatest hardship the men have had to contend with have been long periods of unemployment due to the seasonal decline in sales but this year, due to the efforts of the union to spread production over as long a period as possible, the majority of workers have worked at least 11 months. From present indications, there is a possibility that negotiations on the new agreement will open shortly.
