Miss Wanda Cheney, who has been a Juneau visitor from Warren, Minnesota, for the past several weeks was seriously injured last week in a fall while hiking near the old Perseverance mine property.
The fall came when Miss Cheney and George Leveque, Alaska-Juneau employee, attempted a descent of the mountainside beyond the Alaska-Juneau glory hole by means of chopping footholds in the glacier slide. It is estimated that they slid and rolled about 100 yards before coming to a violent halt against the rocks at the bottom.
Leveque was not hurt so badly as Miss Cheney, and when he was unable to revive his companion he went to the blacksmith shop at the glory hole where he found four men to help him. Miss Cheney was carried two miles on a stretcher to the opening of No. 1 hoist, by means of which she was lowered into the mine, where she was placed in an ambulance car and taken through to the mine entrance. From there an ambulance took her to St. Ann's hospital for medical treatment.
The accident occurred at 4:30 p.m., and it was five hours later before Miss Cheney reached the hospital, most of which time she was unconscious.
