A man drunk at the wheel of a car resulted in a traffic mishap that caused injuries to four persons Monday evening of this week on Highway 61, near the Mississippi line. The victims were: Amos Chappel, 28, and Davis Wells, 28, of 1118 Thomas Street; Katie Byrd, 49, 140 East Utah St., and Rosa Armstrong, 27, of 897 McComb.
All were carried to John Gaston Hospital for emergency treatment in an R. S. Lewis ambulance. Wells sustained a wrenched right shoulder. The other victims were only slightly hurt.
According to investigation made by deputy sheriff S. C. Halliburton, the motorists were motoring south on Highway 61, toward Mississippi. When they came within a half mile of the State Line, one Mann Walker, who was driving a Chevrolet Sedan, bearing Mississippi license, attempted to pass the Ford car in which Chappel and the other three persons were riding. He speeded up his car and cut short to the right of the Ford car, forcing it into a ditch. The Ford turned over twice, injuring its occupants.
All witnesses stated that Walker was drunk. After the accident, he drove about a mile down the highway, and then came back to the scene of the accident. Walker left again before a State Highway officer arrived.
