ALEXANDRIA
SATURDAY MORNING, June 20.

SHE
W
THE VERY AGE AND BODY OF THE TIME
HIS FORM AND PRESSURE.

Both houses of Congress were yesterday sitting with closed doors.

It is now WAR between the United States and Great-Britain. Congress have at length opened "Pandora's Box," and from it has issued one of the deadliest evils which ever befell a nation, particularly one situated as these U. States are—they have done us all the harm they can; but although they have exercised their power as far as in them lies, of taking away our living thank Heaven they have left us with life!

We do most sincerely condole with our patrons on this melancholy event; especially with those (and they are unfortunately, for them, numerous) who have large amounts now on the sea—it will give us great pleasure to announce these arrivals:—Our country will want the proceeds.

It may not be amiss, now that a new era is opened upon us, changing the face of almost every thing in the moral or physical world, to declare our determination to continue, in our editorial capacity, the same path we have hitherto pursued. Regardless of consequences we shall ever give utterance to what is on our sincere conception of eternal right: and because a blow calculated to wound in a vital manner the best interests of our country, and jeopardizing her very existence, be given by authority, it cannot be expected of us to assent, much less applaud such conduct; and we shall not do it. If our press must be relinquished, or prostituted, there will not be a moment's hesitation in the choice. We have uniformly deprecated this war with all our might, as avoidable with honor, and we can see nothing in the last fatal message to Congress to alter our opinion in the least.
