Surprise Party
Friends of Norvin Lewis gathered in the U.S. District Courtroom yesterday for a farewell surprise party in recognition of his 35 years of service in the office of the U.S. Clerk of the Court, all of which was served in Nome.
A mock trial was held with Judge Vernon Forbes, who is here from Fairbanks, presiding, complete with warrant, handcuffs, and full panel of life-long friends as jurors.
He was found guilty of 35 years of service to the community since 1922 when he took over his duties and was sentenced to at least 30 years of retirement. The trial was cleverly conducted by Judge Forbes, Bob Scott as Clerk of the Court, Russell Hermann, D.A., and Jim von der Heydt as attorney for the defense.
Following the trial, coffee and cake was served in the courtroom by the wives of representatives of the Justice Department.
Norvin Lewis retires November 1st with Joe Kroninger assuming the office of U.S. Clerk of the Court.
