The Sentinel predicted the nomination of Mayor Pond by the Democrats for Governor of California. It now predicts his triumphant election by a majority ranging anywhere from four thousand to twelve thousand. Pond is as certain to be the next Governor of California as an election is to be held. As a matter of fact, the whole Democratic ticket will be elected in the Golden State this Fall. The Legislature will also be Democratic, and we are to have a Democratic United States Senator to take the place of Leland Stanford. Steve M. White, of Los Angeles, is the man who will knock the Senatorial persimmon almost without an effort. Steve White is the ablest man of either party, by long odds, in the State of California. He will make a great and winning campaign. Tom Clunie, Jim Budd and the rest of the Democratic aspirants will not be heard of in the race. Neither of them deserves to be mentioned in the same month with Steve White. It is in the air that the name of the Republican party in California this fall is "Mud," from top to bottom. Pond for Governor and White for Senator will sweep the field. Stanford's corrupt millions will not make a perceptible impression on the fight.-Eureka Sentinel.
While we are willing to admit the Sentinel's superiority as a prophet and believing as we do that the Democrats have a better chance for success this year, both in Nevada and California, than they have had for many years past, we are not quite so sanguine as to expect that we will win the whole works, though it is not impossible.
