Full Text

May 12. We hear that Mr. Wilkes gave ten Guineas to each of the Warders, who attended him in the Tower. Mr. Wilkes, the Day after he was dismissed from being Colonel of the Buckinghamshire Militia, sent twenty Guineas to be divided among the private Men, to drink his Majesty's Health. The Apartment in which Mr. Wilkes was confined in the Tower was the same to which the Earl of Oxford had been committed for advising some of the Articles of the Peace of Utrecht. The Public may be assured, that Mr. Wilkes has commenced Actions against all the King's Messengers, who lately took him up under the Secretaries of State, and against every Person concerned in that Affair. We have it from a very good Hand, that the Prosecutors for the Crown, in Mr. Wilkes's Affair, have withdrawn their Subpoena for Treason, and laid their Information for a Misdemeanor and Contempt. Mr. Kearsey's Bail was 1000l. himself, and 500l. each of his two Sureties.
