THE EIGHTH OF JANUARY.
Novel Preparations for its Commemoration, in St. Louis, Reception and Banquet
The celebration of the anniversary of the battle of New Orleans will be indulged in on the 8th inst., to a degree not often reached in the festivities of such an occasion.
In the first place the magnificent opera of Mignon is to be performed at De Bar's grand Opera House. Miss Christine Nilsson appearing in all her glory. In attendance there will be Gov. Hendricks and wife, of Indiana, and Gov. Beveridge and wife, of Illinois, and Governor Woodson and wife, of Missouri. Other distinguished gentlemen and ladies from afar are also to be present. The theatre is to be decorated as if for some great feast or festival. Flags are to be everywhere, streamers are to be woven into frescoes and canopy the ceilings in clouds of scarlet and gold. The youth and the beauty of St. Louis are to gather together, as the evening gathers together the colors of the rainbow: magnificent toilettes will be in all the seats, and after the theatre, at splendid banquet at the Laclede hotel is to end the delights of the day.
This event, the like of which has never been seen before in St. Louis, has already stirred fashionable society to its depths. It is the theme of parlor and boudoir, of the fireside and the promenade way, and it will continue to increase in the fascinations of its surroundings until a perfect flood-tide of fashion and loveliness inundates everything connected with either the entertainment at the Opera House or the banquet at the hotel.--Dispatch
