Dalma Hanson Is Honored
Supt. A. B. Phillips Reports on Attendance
The Chamber of Commerce today, at the regular weekly meeting, entertained as guests, the teachers of the Juneau Public Schools and the Juneau-Douglas Government school.
Speaking and introducing the 33 teachers present, A. B. Phillips, Superintendent of Juneau Schools, gave a short history of the 12 years, he has been connected with the local schools, as well as a short report on the condition of the schools in comparison with other years. Schools are now crowded if compared to the war years, however in 1929 enrollment of the schools reached close to 1,000 pupils, which is too congested as the high school is only equipped for 175 pupils.
Enrollment in the schools at this time, as reported by Mr. Phillips, is as follows: This year the high school at this time, has 200 enrolled pupils against 171 of last year and 296 in 1939. In the Grade School there are 773 enrolled pupils, this year, against 488 of last year and 651 in 1939. This makes a grand total of 973 pupils enrolled this year against 659 of last year and 947 in 1939.
There are also 92 enrolled native children this year which is 22 more than last year.
Dalma Hanson, first grade teacher, was honored by the Chamber of Commerce for her 21 years service as a teacher in Juneau. Miss Hanson has taught longer in Juneau than any other teacher and as R. E. Robertson, President of the School Board said, as he presented her with a lovely bouquet of gladioli from the Chamber. "we are indeed grateful to her for her many years of service to the children of Juneau."
Teachers present at the luncheon were Dalma Hanson, Kathryn R. Gray, Helen Webster, Margaret Maland, Helyn Hoskins, Rose Olive King, Barney Anderson, Marian Kniffen, Ruth Cronkite, Mary Monagle, Betty Harvard, Mrs. Frances L. Paul, Mrs. J. Allen, F. F. Dryden, Leonard C. Allen, Phyllis Grant, Mary E. Brooks, Richard H. Byrns, Albert N. Eide, Henry A. Harmon, Arline Walker, Ralph Wright, Georgia Arlowe, Myrtle Phillips, Armanda Cook, Katherine Elle, Dorothy McLeod, Ethel Murphy, Emily Dean, Pat A. Murphy, Mrs. Winnifred McDonnel and Superintendent A. B. Hayes.

Leonard Allen, Superintendent of the Juneau Douglas Government School, also introduced two of the members of his staff, Mrs. Tom Allen and Mrs. Francis Paul.
