Full Text

WHAT WILL THE ADMINISTRATION DO
With South Carolina?-It is supposed
by some that when Mr. Webster alluded to
South Carolina, in his speech made at An-
apolis, Md., last winter, he in some meas-
ure hinted at the course which the admin-
istration will pursue, in the event of seces-
sion. He said on that occasion:
"Leave them to their own consideration.
Let them dwell in secession many days.
and inwardly digest it. (Applause and
laughter.) And so far as I have any voice
in the councils of the country, this medi-
tation of theirs shall not be disturbed; not
a breath shall ruffle their sensibility, until
it comes to a point where something is
done that amounts to an actual conflict
with the Constitution." (Applause.)
