The Lyceum—A New set of By-laws, Rules and Regulations, have been kindly furnished us for perusal, under which it is proposed to re-organize the Lyceum. The rules, as far as they have force in them to do so, contemplate a permanent organization. The fact that "one hundred dollars will entitle a person to life membership," will no doubt cause many to rush madly in. The writer of the rules, over estimates the value of the passion of our people for literary pursuits. If the amount had been fixed at half a hundred, it would be better. The history of former Lyceums, etc., would furnish some few valuable hints to the architect of such an institution as is now proposed. We have the honor to be an honorary member of no less than seven distinct organizations of this kind, which have existed from time to time within the borders of our town. They are all dead, dead, dead: a life membership is of little interest in a dead body, or we should enter the stock market and offer to sell. The base of the new building now proposed, is entirely too wide for the superstructure.
