ONLY THREE MILES YET TO DIG BETWEEN ST. AUGUSTINE AND JACKSONVILLE-INLAND WATERWAY ALONG ENTIRE COAST.
Special to The Journal.
St. Augustine, Aug. 10.-Second only in importance to the wonderful Key West extension of the Florida East Coast railway is the canal system extending along the east coast of the state, being constructed by the Florida East Coast Line Canal and Transportation company. Florida is fortunate in having its share of the great undertakings that have for their object the improvement of transportation facilities. The east coast is especially favored in this regard.
By the first of the year 1910 there will be an open waterway from the mouth of the St. Johns river, all the way through to Key West. At the present time less than three miles separate the ends of the Inland waterway, and this stretch is practically divided between St. Johns river and Matanzas sound. Relative to the scenery along this stretch of waterway from St. Augustine to the St. Johns river it is safe to say there is not a more beautiful stretch of scenery in the State of Florida.
The landscape is varied. Leaving St. Augustine the wide reaches of the North river and the inlet contrast with the narrow places just before the canal commences. The whole length of the ten miles of canal cutting is fringed on both sides with the densest and most luxurious growth of hammock. Often the great pine trees tower to a height of more than a hundred feet, while there is an abundance of tropical palms and undergrowth.
Pablo creek is one of the most enchanting streams in the south, and the entire trip from St. Augustine to Jacksonville, when the canal is completed, will be an attraction which thousands of visitors will be glad to enjoy.
