LaFollette and Nixon

As the revolutionary victory of the colonies strengthened and inspired the spirit of democracy in a corner of the globe, so whenever a man, regardless of personal profit, turns from easily acquired wealth, bears calumny unflinchingly, and dedicates his personal ambition to the ultimate good of his people, in his life work lies an inspiration and a hope for every graft ridden commonwealth. Such a man is Robert M. LaFollette, republican senator from Wisconsin.

I desire to call attention to some of the amendments to the railroad bill offered by Senator LaFollette and at the same time demonstrate the attitude towards those amendments of Senator Nixon of Nevada.

First was an amendment providing for the physical valuation of railways as a basis for the fixing of correct rates by the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Senator Nixon voted against this amendment and so against a modified form presented by Senator Cummins.

Second an amendment providing that telephone and telegraph companies be included in the jurisdiction of the Interstate Commerce Commission. Our Senator Nixon voted against this amendment.

Third an amendment providing that no judge shall be designated for service on the Court of Commerce who is financially interested in any railway and also that any appointment of these judges shall be made by the supreme court instead of by the chief justice. On the first provision Senator Nixon is recorded as voting against the amendment and on the second as not voting.

Fourth an amendment providing that no railroad employee shall be kept in continuous service for more than fourteen hours. Senator Nixon was paired
