AT THE SEA-SHORE.

At Atlantic City:

Departure of the Zouaves.

Once. The Regiment of Enjoyment not
Indeed.

Our Own Correspondence.

Surf House, Atlantic City, N. J.,
August 9, 1869.

The Zouaves departed. For an entire week their
many pantaloons were the most noticeable
feature of the love of the place.

Every evening during their stay there was a hop of
greater or smaller proportions at one of the hotels,
and at every hop the lightest and most fantastic
costumes, surmounted by the ample red folds of
Zouave pants, were to the fore. On Friday evening
the Zouave season in the hopping line was
brought to a close by a very elegant and crowded
affair at the Surf House, and on Saturday afternoon the whole regiment was
mustered into the dining-room of the same
establishment to partake of the farewell repast.

The regiment formed on the lawn in front
of the hotel, and after a few preliminary
flourishes with their muskets and scarlet
fezzes, made their way past an admiring and
tearful throng to the depot, and Camp Meade,
with all its belongings, was a thing of the past.

Immediately after the departure of the bold
soldiers with the brilliant pantaloons, the disc
of the moon passed over a goodly portion of
the face of the sun, and the disconsolate
islanders turned from viewing dazzling un-
mentionables with the naked eye, to the con-
templation of the still more dazzling celestial phe-
omenon through ragged bits of smoked glass.

But although the Zouaves have gone hence
all the capacity of the sojourners for enjoyment
has not gone with them. On Saturday evening
the United States Hotel was enlivened with the
presence of hundreds of people from all parts of
the island, the attractions being a hop and a
grand outburst of fireworks, both of which
passed off with eclat, and more especially the
fireworks. At the same time a concert was in
progress at the Excursion House, the performers
being the members of an excellent Philadelphia
organization known as the "Vocal Union," who
on this occasion acquitted themselves with much
credit. The programme for the next week is
quite attractive. On Wednesday a matinee will
be given at the Surf House, at which a choice
musical programme will be executed under the
direction of Mr. Jean Louis, interspersed with
readings by Mr. A. R. Van Horn, of Philadelphia.

On Friday evening, at the United States Hotel, the
children will be thrown into an ecstasy by a
fancy hop and carnival for their especial benefit,
the preparations for which give promise of a
great success. Then on the evening of Monday
next, August 16, an invitation ball masque will
be given at the Surf House, and as an abundance
of elaborate and grotesque costumes will be ac-
cessible, the repetition of the brilliant scene
recently witnessed at the Excursion House may
be anticipated. The Reception Committee will
be attired in the costume of the Court of Charles
II, and the Floor Managers in that of the court
of Louis XVI, serving as a nucleus around which
the maskers can rally. All these announcements
predict a lively and agreeable time for a week to
come.
